I've had several people contact me to make special presents to commemorate their daughters' and nieces' roles. One woman's daughter was excited to play a Spanish Dancer and would it be possible to make a ballerina in the red and black costume. She was to send me a picture of her daughter's costume over the weekend but I was so excited to begin that I scoured Google images for examples and here is what I came up with. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgLId4Qjds3cBATE0tb5lMaaYb7WeWt2rfDqOh03PdacMj3ZuV7WbDaxUhyphenhyphenR-R_7xNnbHpmpXT_-_kQZwbVQNrI8sjTRAvn9a63YGG3ey1q9VdkrzgoSHAI8fcLutYEeWZz8wqxmcb9rM/s1600/20101117_1133.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgLId4Qjds3cBATE0tb5lMaaYb7WeWt2rfDqOh03PdacMj3ZuV7WbDaxUhyphenhyphenR-R_7xNnbHpmpXT_-_kQZwbVQNrI8sjTRAvn9a63YGG3ey1q9VdkrzgoSHAI8fcLutYEeWZz8wqxmcb9rM/s320/20101117_1133.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
I used some red velvet hydrangea petals and a black tutu that I had leftover from my ill-fated Goth Petalbelle doll line. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF2aPzzBz2MH1FE3kLVD2YGmWcS_77WwpyL86bpZSqiGVIRTVGAA4j2Lm6GflnfVnD8sjzZ-qdt_sM_GURXI3CGFTrQslPCUh27KsDf95KqElC4Y7xG5baVDfXgbVjeLQJK4VDyzkTtdg/s1600/Practice+Spanish+Dancer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhF2aPzzBz2MH1FE3kLVD2YGmWcS_77WwpyL86bpZSqiGVIRTVGAA4j2Lm6GflnfVnD8sjzZ-qdt_sM_GURXI3CGFTrQslPCUh27KsDf95KqElC4Y7xG5baVDfXgbVjeLQJK4VDyzkTtdg/s320/Practice+Spanish+Dancer.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I've since gone on a roll and tried to make as many dolls and ornaments as I could from the ballet. Here is Clara holding her beloved Nutcracker. I used silk dogwood petals for her nightgown and found the teeniest Nutcracker beads. I especially like the way I styled her hair with part of it pinned in the back and falling around her shoulders.<br />

And a quartet of ballerinas from The Waltz of the Flowers which I'm also calling Sugarplum Fairies. Costumes and colors vary from production to production, so I'm hoping to get away with it :) I made the different colored paper flowers which decorate their hair. <br />

When I design a new doll for my shop I usually don't know what kind of hair style she's going to have. When I began making my dolls a few years ago I gave almost all my fairies stylish updos. I loved how sophisticated they looked with their hair gracefully coiled but now it depends on how I've positioned her hands or her body, how fancy her dress looks, or how playful. Hands clasped together across her body makes her look shy so she gets a side ponytail. A fairy who wears a playful, flippy skirt usually gets to wear her hair around her shoulders. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiImCHi8Qn7itS0iH4jO4ccNnDdzFwH2St7O7BunxINDpFKJfyZdg3bRON3z5S2FaGsdFzQQqU52VUW1I31dm1Peyj11whwgkP4M36fkKFKjSKxJO3Mz_9_P_t-h4Z4Ia5n_-V8hIwj1mQ/s1600/20101024_0526.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiImCHi8Qn7itS0iH4jO4ccNnDdzFwH2St7O7BunxINDpFKJfyZdg3bRON3z5S2FaGsdFzQQqU52VUW1I31dm1Peyj11whwgkP4M36fkKFKjSKxJO3Mz_9_P_t-h4Z4Ia5n_-V8hIwj1mQ/s320/20101024_0526.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I prepare the bundles of mercerized thread I use for their hair beforehand, so I need to keep their "hair" long until the last moment since different styles require different lengths of thread. I thought I'd show my new doll pre-hair cut.<br />
<br />
What kind of hairstyle do you think she should get?petalbelleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02943814538935070849noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22572270736834480.post-45163916361450114902010-10-18T17:33:00.000-07:002010-10-19T05:59:55.295-07:00Peanuts and EmeraldsActress Helen Hayes was sitting in the corner at a high-society cocktail party. In her twenties, Hayes was quiet and shy and felt out of place with the rowdy crowd. As she was thinking of an excuse for leaving, a handsome gentleman came over and offered her a dish of peanuts. "I wish they were emeralds," he said. They were married for 28 years.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx1P5lfowe_T_g8ijAKjHhybYhw2rUXy1rtIZyXqnZYHeuqKvyon7pvelZ6IC-fmKR2m-y3qmTtcm2fZxTD0WQJt8VcYNv54Sxk-L8Ohor0dZKtD15dez6wPnhmze2an_eN2PvchlmvY4/s1600/20101018_0506.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx1P5lfowe_T_g8ijAKjHhybYhw2rUXy1rtIZyXqnZYHeuqKvyon7pvelZ6IC-fmKR2m-y3qmTtcm2fZxTD0WQJt8VcYNv54Sxk-L8Ohor0dZKtD15dez6wPnhmze2an_eN2PvchlmvY4/s320/20101018_0506.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I've always loved this story and I thought of it as I was making this fairy doll. I gave her blond hair and a sweet smile. She need something elegant to wear so I sewed a strip of black vintage lace together to create a beautiful, delicate skirt. In her hands is a small silver bag. I imagine Helen Hayes carrying a similar purse and would have had to put it aside as she reached for the peanuts. <br />
<br />
How did you and your partner meet?<br />

For a person who collects vintage papers and embellishments, finding a cigar box at a thrift store is extremely exciting. Love letters? Old photographs? Pressed flowers? Cigar boxes are just plain romantic and they never fail to disappoint. I found this box at a my local thrift shop and it made my afternoon.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCItSnUNce304JlnkgYubQ_cvmopXOH1h4KuhsCXhaYqTX6-qs6UM10xWgx7r31OUBFeO3P-W9rjemzkPuJ59LjNr-lSur06Tho1y9YQR7zMBepl9-qmHCY6l0lyLJD7FazDnqzfi-mj8/s1600/20100815_0274.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCItSnUNce304JlnkgYubQ_cvmopXOH1h4KuhsCXhaYqTX6-qs6UM10xWgx7r31OUBFeO3P-W9rjemzkPuJ59LjNr-lSur06Tho1y9YQR7zMBepl9-qmHCY6l0lyLJD7FazDnqzfi-mj8/s320/20100815_0274.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Definitely a major vintage find. Inside I found several old wooden spools of satin-y mercerized cotton thread (Mercerized cotton thread is the same shiny thread used in embroidery floss). There were some great vintage labels on a few.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiza6H8srR8tYqL8ap2TcP42gREWINifVnr8lR1Rd3YWwcidzsqQRdziYb5QztgxfN9tVat9sN-UzUbXK4xsW0rMeIvo5P4IcQx0sIU_QThrU0GERbaV2IjeJN49iTVvr4oV2CQJgV3rvo/s1600/20100815_0272.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiza6H8srR8tYqL8ap2TcP42gREWINifVnr8lR1Rd3YWwcidzsqQRdziYb5QztgxfN9tVat9sN-UzUbXK4xsW0rMeIvo5P4IcQx0sIU_QThrU0GERbaV2IjeJN49iTVvr4oV2CQJgV3rvo/s320/20100815_0272.JPG" /></a></div><br />
But the best and one of the most prized items that you can find inside a cigar box was the vintage lace.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKKl1Zqc3Rz8XUyVk8x3zjkiLM516usxcpLfyl5vP0pRLOk810kEguHOUeOtwNb7dqkPAXpTpaTVC7Kx0lsrQRFpiQbm04vyotA_jkf0PYpViSoobgl9xB4dBSMbNTxj64PkLqkMV1ZwI/s1600/20100815_0277.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKKl1Zqc3Rz8XUyVk8x3zjkiLM516usxcpLfyl5vP0pRLOk810kEguHOUeOtwNb7dqkPAXpTpaTVC7Kx0lsrQRFpiQbm04vyotA_jkf0PYpViSoobgl9xB4dBSMbNTxj64PkLqkMV1ZwI/s320/20100815_0277.JPG" /></a></div><br />
This is more detailed view of the lace. It's so delicate and some parts look a little irregular so I'm tempted to think that it's handmade.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrIbAGIkUzVwy2OwhlaeIrqArO7A6VhU7VRgaJi9oiOKCdTds0PHGvl39YcJvFtIq0Q0YigMLa9yDgOQxdWKKx5WpqH7IfTuoaOvunjUbOyvnBUK1dU3kTqsP-7RXm-FiUTu_pkrDLGEI/s1600/20100815_0281.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrIbAGIkUzVwy2OwhlaeIrqArO7A6VhU7VRgaJi9oiOKCdTds0PHGvl39YcJvFtIq0Q0YigMLa9yDgOQxdWKKx5WpqH7IfTuoaOvunjUbOyvnBUK1dU3kTqsP-7RXm-FiUTu_pkrDLGEI/s320/20100815_0281.JPG" /></a></div><br />

Again, I really have no idea what to do with the lace, but damn it, I'm glad I have it. What would you do with this vintage lace?petalbelleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02943814538935070849noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22572270736834480.post-68059224108499846032010-08-09T00:41:00.000-07:002010-08-09T00:41:42.898-07:00Pitfalls of the Custom OrderI recently received a custom order from a lovely seller I met in the Etsy forums. She purchased an angel ornament and asked whether my little bride doll could also be made into an ornament. I tried doing this last year and it was a small nightmare. The poor thing kept flopping around the ornament like a pair of pants in the dryer. I thought I'd give it another ago and and to my surprise, voila! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7QCJlcxQBl9b_5cwpPHRMXNvV5aaVVi_YY8klxAGSBdRkzwRyOsDo27bdZh1zuKXHoSKAhy4wP_4Iaaqgt0gII8dLbKzuGzKpkZqrhH_lAEdUgW4iXIEAkLg7etOgjsVJWURTG8H2Rb8/s1600/20100730_0044.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7QCJlcxQBl9b_5cwpPHRMXNvV5aaVVi_YY8klxAGSBdRkzwRyOsDo27bdZh1zuKXHoSKAhy4wP_4Iaaqgt0gII8dLbKzuGzKpkZqrhH_lAEdUgW4iXIEAkLg7etOgjsVJWURTG8H2Rb8/s320/20100730_0044.JPG" /></a></div><br />
Solid. You'd have thought she's was anchored in there with rebar. These are pictures of my prototype which I was so excited about and listed in my shop right away. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxa1i1yNy5SW3GqBVGdUk-j7XoFvJOOpGVnYsWKlD0M0pNfKeMJCD2n6unfkHvRI6Ae7cks6KbjmlMOK7ZdNpJP7BWEmBV11OC8DfrjnUm3I252ezfP62QeL8ty8Ga5i1aDM-i_FnM4Mw/s1600/20100730_0045.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxa1i1yNy5SW3GqBVGdUk-j7XoFvJOOpGVnYsWKlD0M0pNfKeMJCD2n6unfkHvRI6Ae7cks6KbjmlMOK7ZdNpJP7BWEmBV11OC8DfrjnUm3I252ezfP62QeL8ty8Ga5i1aDM-i_FnM4Mw/s320/20100730_0045.JPG" /></a></div><br />
But when I tried to do the actual custom piece, holy mackerel, same old problems. I had to take a cookie break (thin, crisp lemon cookies with lemon frosting I keep in the freezer-you should try it). I finally finished the custom piece but I'm going to have to find a more efficient way of doing this. Whew. Potential good news, though. I may have tracked down materials to make a wedding groom. If I can pull this off I can make custom wedding cake toppers. Oh, yeaaah....petalbelleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02943814538935070849noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22572270736834480.post-4548285779419457872010-07-31T07:19:00.000-07:002010-08-09T00:47:15.248-07:00But There Must Be a Way to Use These...There MUST!While looking for some glue and wooden beads in my boxes I came across these vintage buttons. Aren't they beauties?<br />
<br />

Here is a lovely salmon-colored button with open filigree work.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqsJqtEzDdEyHdWqRkyM6EWHBhCtfuUu7bpn_Q3wqfg2tsppvleRiECHVo539qL0p-qor4lMB3Fxs6uS3g5RyvFnnEuymoIJKuLtS7eFS1S-PZSL_C028uqP2MmeiC5lVhLRmX0t4mUPE/s1600/20100731_0070.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqsJqtEzDdEyHdWqRkyM6EWHBhCtfuUu7bpn_Q3wqfg2tsppvleRiECHVo539qL0p-qor4lMB3Fxs6uS3g5RyvFnnEuymoIJKuLtS7eFS1S-PZSL_C028uqP2MmeiC5lVhLRmX0t4mUPE/s320/20100731_0070.JPG" /></a></div> <br />
But these are the best. They look like bakelite beads from the 20s, all warm and honey colored. I especially like the round black one. <i>Tres</i> sophisticated, no?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGBi_CxkVOJC9rsLIzj3OtZMQFTxgju_OMy7clvHmGKv7NIre_61ViAnUV7m5B_ApHvAk64iySHWcCMDzB2TboCXpLOQsPkbvJ-V_JIsPTyAVYZSzz9RrpO-1BAX4MZ2uzIKbTbAg_HLo/s1600/20100731_0071.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGBi_CxkVOJC9rsLIzj3OtZMQFTxgju_OMy7clvHmGKv7NIre_61ViAnUV7m5B_ApHvAk64iySHWcCMDzB2TboCXpLOQsPkbvJ-V_JIsPTyAVYZSzz9RrpO-1BAX4MZ2uzIKbTbAg_HLo/s320/20100731_0071.JPG" /></a></div> <br />
I picked them up two years ago at the MakerFaire in San Mateo, the gigantic traveling fair that celebrates the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) movement. These buttons were surplus or remnants from some factory and were being used in some awful free craft project. I quietly picked these out and slipped them in my pocket, thinking, "You can't glue these to some cheap piece of metal. They deserve better. There must be a better way to use these. There must!" Problem is, I don't know what.<br />
<br />

Several people have contacted me to ask if my little bride doll can be made into a wedding cake topper and it's proving to be a major project. The problem is that the men figures I make look so plain next to her. Her gown is made from two calla lily blossoms stacked on top of each other. Their long tips trail dramatically behind her as a grand train. She looks like a queen. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp4OFOqai9SK1vnxtS2fxfbj8o1tpXSAgLSqicLfV4vfaEFLINPx3pvKhkUyDwfmaUAEnKNTT1KdZwLJxQbCErhChueRcDxsENFtE72gB0zlbatMapvu0ZuW-0dlgRatv3nI_is8-8faM/s1600/pbelle.stand.wed.bride.blonde.profile.view.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjp4OFOqai9SK1vnxtS2fxfbj8o1tpXSAgLSqicLfV4vfaEFLINPx3pvKhkUyDwfmaUAEnKNTT1KdZwLJxQbCErhChueRcDxsENFtE72gB0zlbatMapvu0ZuW-0dlgRatv3nI_is8-8faM/s320/pbelle.stand.wed.bride.blonde.profile.view.JPG" /></a></div><br />
The groom figures I've made look thin and puny. I didn't even want to take a picture for the blog, they looked so bad. I made a groom out of flower petals and he looked like he was wearing a dress. Then I made it out of wire and he looked abnormally thin, like he had a tape worm. Terrible. I need a suave, dapper-looking dude, like Prince Phillip or Prince William, someone "fit for a queen." Back to the drawing board.<br />
<br />

My parents read to me from a big book of fairy tales and I'd always linger over the picture of Thumbelina. The story went that her little walnut cradle was polished so it looked like mahogany and that she slept in the softest of rose petals. I'd pick up fallen rose petals in the garden and press them up to my cheek to imagine what it would be like.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuUq-bvvk7WO4hJ1HTvaHYKlDG_RZMVbVDOoHgVvd5lZFNqjtZ4Wf4FrxTzwvcvfCo1FmJ8l66U95ql_IFPFd21Ov-q2_BE_jjT3-YNrDUUgcvQ3r7D399IhCgRR2nMkPE1L50OxGNzyI/s1600/P1010645.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuUq-bvvk7WO4hJ1HTvaHYKlDG_RZMVbVDOoHgVvd5lZFNqjtZ4Wf4FrxTzwvcvfCo1FmJ8l66U95ql_IFPFd21Ov-q2_BE_jjT3-YNrDUUgcvQ3r7D399IhCgRR2nMkPE1L50OxGNzyI/s320/P1010645.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<br />
I've decided to replace the walnut shell with a much more uncomfortable but charming nest made from dried, woven grape vines. Instead of rose petals my Thumbelina sleeps snuggled in silk wildflower petals. She's the baby I use in my Mother and Child dolls and I'm trying to figure out a way to create a piece using only the sweet baby. So far I'm planning a baby Jesus doll which is just the right size for a Christmas nativity set. Stay tuned.<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvtz5r90ZnoM0KxyqTcxdeSHGxoUwvW4ya0ar6kC9T6awaTMg0RM_g-xA_4qlJp_Xy6Zvfq7BU7-Oo1r9aMp4RRhquBWYYwC-_Xl9EeH_sLwHa3d5ELF9Vim30MpJpVHsHc6sm0hbeJL0/s1600/MyBirthdayCake.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvtz5r90ZnoM0KxyqTcxdeSHGxoUwvW4ya0ar6kC9T6awaTMg0RM_g-xA_4qlJp_Xy6Zvfq7BU7-Oo1r9aMp4RRhquBWYYwC-_Xl9EeH_sLwHa3d5ELF9Vim30MpJpVHsHc6sm0hbeJL0/s320/MyBirthdayCake.JPG" /></a></div><br />
It was two layers of white cake with a fluffy mango cream filling. There was also some beautiful lattice work in dark and white chocolate which wrapped around the cake. But what really makes this cake special was the shinning pyramid of fruit top-strawberries, kiwis, peaches and rising majestically in the back like the Sydney Opera House is a sliced Fuji apple. Oh, and a grape. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOjmJF-VSoYCAYK7oKAz9JPpNWuD_Erk9j-H3SJZnOdyL_VhKS-hcA9-_om3jC9iM4MQPYVT0IlEsgnLUQS-yGJVUOYWDIoAgter43OXkyYjc7CKYqIE1sV42xIrxmj67TXXGhx6rnEyE/s1600/MyBirthdayCakeArielView.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOjmJF-VSoYCAYK7oKAz9JPpNWuD_Erk9j-H3SJZnOdyL_VhKS-hcA9-_om3jC9iM4MQPYVT0IlEsgnLUQS-yGJVUOYWDIoAgter43OXkyYjc7CKYqIE1sV42xIrxmj67TXXGhx6rnEyE/s320/MyBirthdayCakeArielView.JPG" /></a></div><br />
It was such an adorable cake that I forced everyone to get their picture taken while standing next to it though the cake was some kind of foreign dignitary. They made a toast to my health and happiness and we ate the cake with a nice, dry champagne.petalbelleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02943814538935070849noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22572270736834480.post-87596435983106984992010-07-13T03:37:00.000-07:002010-07-13T05:26:25.682-07:00Fancy Coffee CandiesI love how these little ones turned out. They remind me of a package of coffee candies I received as a child. I felt very grown up since they were made of coffee which only adults were allowed to drink. Each candy was wrapped first in a piece of pastel-colored foil and then in cellophane with a lace design. I remember saving each piece of foil and lacy wrapper. I couldn't remember seeing anything so pretty before. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicfCHUxgCc5LB8KELGSUuwNQKjYXmV_qYgTdxkSMEtUmxoCZqmZqCpVIJBLxgntZq7cZGWJsr4VkT8GwCdLyuUJEAPNvUxI0pYLy-I-3vZhAU8JLmwbSfkr_L2-XxRx5hDNz3qEpwPM94/s1600/three.printed.retouched.retouched.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicfCHUxgCc5LB8KELGSUuwNQKjYXmV_qYgTdxkSMEtUmxoCZqmZqCpVIJBLxgntZq7cZGWJsr4VkT8GwCdLyuUJEAPNvUxI0pYLy-I-3vZhAU8JLmwbSfkr_L2-XxRx5hDNz3qEpwPM94/s320/three.printed.retouched.retouched.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Sitting on my hand is one of my favorite ways of photographing my dolls. Although I describe them as miniature you get a real sense here of how tiny my little ones really are. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2-C-hxLANwlWEFX-fsZfLRP0oUR0GRPyaGfoxsMnwLFJeLuSBGa4RZusMO_2_ohSB9HXA4KxMy_YUrlZzu-6xP-4kgOsqnscrlWHutYVSJrGnG5XJw0tWv8JX4ZdSMZNsvLrkIW96Ykc/s1600/Photo+Editing+Wierdness+Three.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2-C-hxLANwlWEFX-fsZfLRP0oUR0GRPyaGfoxsMnwLFJeLuSBGa4RZusMO_2_ohSB9HXA4KxMy_YUrlZzu-6xP-4kgOsqnscrlWHutYVSJrGnG5XJw0tWv8JX4ZdSMZNsvLrkIW96Ykc/s320/Photo+Editing+Wierdness+Three.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Although I love all three, I'm partial to the redhead in the pink dress with the scallop design. Developing a special technique for printing on cloth flower petals has opened so many creative opportunities for the kinds of dolls I can now create. Exciting. <br />
<br />

The Nantucket Bedroom Set from Pottery Barn Kids with matching Canopy in Halifax Pink. The Skojig reading lamp from Children's Ikea. What next? May I introduce for your consideration, the latest edition addition to the Petalbelle Shadowbox Series: The Enchanted Princess.<br />

Notice the clean, simple lines of the castle, cut from card stock and mounted with foam-core adhesive tabs which gives the piece a 3-D effect. The light robin's egg blue background provides a pleasing contrast. <br />

The miniature princess inside is dressed in the classic fairy tale style: ballroom gown, rich jewel-tone colors and a sparkly crown. Look closely and you will see different shades of gold highlights in her long blond hair. Delightful.<br />

Measuring 6 inches by 6 inches this piece is sure to impress. Soon available in my Etsy shop. After all, Elmo is so last year, no matter what Morgan from Gymboree says. <br />

*This Enchanted Princess doll will also be available inside a hand-blown glass ornament.petalbelleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02943814538935070849noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22572270736834480.post-66858461550063174972010-07-06T04:28:00.000-07:002010-07-09T03:31:09.401-07:00Admit it. You loved Riverdance...The thunderous sound of a hundred feet striking the stage in perfect unison. Pretty girls in short skirts, arms tight at their side, backs straight as a pin jumping straight into the air. And Michael Flatley? You followed him when he left to become "Lord of the Dance." You even bought the video on PBS. This little Irish Step Fairy is my homage to that international sensation known as Riverdance. <br />

She wears a bright orange, long sleeved bodice with a skirt that begins in a buttery yellow-orange color and gradually fades into a more reddish hue.<br />

But my favorite part of her colorful little frock is the ornate design I hand-stamped on her skirt. Each petal panel displays a cross design inside a circle with an intricate flourish on top.<br />

This fairy is made from the silk petals of a dogwood blossom. Until I went to graduate school in Northern California I had never seen a dogwood blossom. It sounded awful. I thought about hairy animals and dead tree limbs. They turned out to be such delicate little things, four long creamy white petals with a blush of light green at the center and at the very tip a little brown-colored notch. They were nestled in branches and fluttered in the wind.<br />
<br />
When the artificial dogwood flowers went on sale I grabbed five or six branches and rooted around inside the plastic bin for loose pieces that had fallen off. You usually don't see cloth dogwood petals. Working with such long petals can make proportion a bit of a nightmare but it worked out in the end. I especially liked how her hair came out. You can see the light and dark shades of brown, a trademark which makes my little ones unique.petalbelleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02943814538935070849noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22572270736834480.post-71501380955189099612010-06-26T23:21:00.000-07:002010-06-29T15:44:48.221-07:00Petalbelle Shadowbox ArtI am so excited about my new line of Petalbelle Shadowboxes! Although I enjoy making ornaments I wanted to incorporate my love of papercrafts. The photos aren't the greatest but I wanted to show them off a bit. This pink fairy with the aqua background and the orange glitter is from my birthday shadowbox series which features different colored backgrounds and fairies. Surprisingly, it's finding a balanced combination of colors which is the most difficult part of creating these shadowboxes.<br /><br />I'm particularly proud of the way I decided to do the back of these pieces. A local professional picture framer was kind enough to give me a mini-tutorial.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHp70DeYEM9lxTRi0Y5DYFmytnl0xQgWzYjcYFBlm3CdgGJU1Y-gj74ahW72UfzHZ7897FfoB4J41MnUYk6B2unwISjCDmvLY9lGMZANUYgg8za7SRYJ8xIqj5qh3T8csI4R4Mjm4M4II/s1600/P1010118.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHp70DeYEM9lxTRi0Y5DYFmytnl0xQgWzYjcYFBlm3CdgGJU1Y-gj74ahW72UfzHZ7897FfoB4J41MnUYk6B2unwISjCDmvLY9lGMZANUYgg8za7SRYJ8xIqj5qh3T8csI4R4Mjm4M4II/s320/P1010118.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5487335788664710194" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTtmuzmMXpga3jVEEAf-OW21G6uqMMCFh0xZrxgDO4sPNVDsPMMeQu3HUmF8lM1eaXlqJsT8aN5wQ1gt7_LtaRy_V_jSLu0dgo42D_gJtRaRNwnkrOc01XhnKpJxqZK1aicvpH_dTM6HU/s1600/P1010121.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTtmuzmMXpga3jVEEAf-OW21G6uqMMCFh0xZrxgDO4sPNVDsPMMeQu3HUmF8lM1eaXlqJsT8aN5wQ1gt7_LtaRy_V_jSLu0dgo42D_gJtRaRNwnkrOc01XhnKpJxqZK1aicvpH_dTM6HU/s320/P1010121.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5487335799344190546" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc7CLSav-c24xpT5UaDTKxBYr4Ml6gieVklGQuGrlA3TgFOpJfrv9oJ5SBkmjEOC2jlMzbvd2B0eDf77IHhlmMDeR_5IsODPFM2FtIEQ2Y8k8b6-mlwXr00FRD-WboX9LywpCnPIJh9vc/s1600/shadowbox+view+back.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc7CLSav-c24xpT5UaDTKxBYr4Ml6gieVklGQuGrlA3TgFOpJfrv9oJ5SBkmjEOC2jlMzbvd2B0eDf77IHhlmMDeR_5IsODPFM2FtIEQ2Y8k8b6-mlwXr00FRD-WboX9LywpCnPIJh9vc/s320/shadowbox+view+back.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5487335809552579858" border="0" /></a>petalbelleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02943814538935070849noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22572270736834480.post-83162066570779611792009-11-25T15:23:00.000-08:002010-07-07T03:58:17.627-07:00Have Ball Gown, Will Travel<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghup2JR_q_CUZcjxVZs28NpTSNimsaKSQl8oy0q1u3sF_xF1pl1Wf2n-051SXT-yNGJT6J84HEeYE16Y6Qm6IjLIE46fHSOaIsS9igX4HKFtzdsiOz91vqYonG0f6amtQTalRX4sYU1oQ/s1600/pbelle.loose.princess.jewel.tone.full.view.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408193685026893762" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghup2JR_q_CUZcjxVZs28NpTSNimsaKSQl8oy0q1u3sF_xF1pl1Wf2n-051SXT-yNGJT6J84HEeYE16Y6Qm6IjLIE46fHSOaIsS9igX4HKFtzdsiOz91vqYonG0f6amtQTalRX4sYU1oQ/s320/pbelle.loose.princess.jewel.tone.full.view.jpg" style="float: left; height: 240px; margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; width: 320px;" /></a><br />

<div></div><div><span style="font-size: 85%;"></span> </div><div><span style="font-size: 85%;">I <span style="color: black;">made this princess to fit inside a fairy tale shadowbox that I'll soon be selling in my Etsy shop, but she's too cute not to show off early. One of the most challenging things about making these dolls is choosing the color combination, from the cloth flower petals I use for the frocks, to the bodice color, to the different shades in her hair. I especially like the colors used here, rich jewel tones. Can't you see her finding her way through a forest? Sure she's in a ball gown but fairy tale heroines tend to dress in seasonally inappropriate clothing. <img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408193665929200402" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibTG1qrdJ6sYM-jECwzKTPLNlJuQa7YNnudAjOGjvbSAQuVjxBM3oovFs0jiEBlMQ7P5Ke6_1erR_648DCohCggHivtzmyi89zNknKfePsAHhAaSH4KBC74FCWceR1Pz3P4kUxgE2hvWI/s320/pbelles.loose.princesses.jewel.tone.close.up(1).jpg" style="float: left; height: 240px; margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; width: 320px;" /></span></span><span style="font-size: 85%;"><br />

I decided to make a special ballerina for the winter season. Her frilly tulle ballet skirt is dusted with a shade of glitter that at first appears clear but when you look at it carefully, is actually a shade of electric violet. This photograph doesn't capture this effect fully, but this color glitter is exactly like that magical shade of electric voiolet that snow on the ground gets when the moonlight bounces off of it in the early evening. </span>petalbelleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02943814538935070849noreply@blogger.com0
